Belly, flank or back: which crocodile cut?

Short answer: the belly is the large, flat, square-scaled centre of a crocodile skin and the cut most used for handbags, small leather goods and watch straps. The flanks are narrower with rounder, uneven scales; the back carries bony plates and is used far less. Belly is also the only cut that can be graded and measured consistently.

Why belly is the standard

The belly gives the widest uninterrupted area with a regular scale pattern, so a maker can cut matching panels. It is also the part where width and defects can be read the same way on every skin, which is what makes grading and measuring consistent. That is why we supply belly skins only.

When flank or back makes sense

If you want a more natural, irregular look, or a small panel for trim or accent, flank can work. Back and its bony plates suit pieces designed around that texture, and they are harder to cut and finish evenly. These are design choices rather than quality grades, and they are not part of our range.

Choosing for your product

Start from the largest piece you need to cut, then pick the belly width that fits it; the width table in how skins are graded and measured maps widths to products. The buyer’s checklist lists everything to specify in an enquiry.

Questions buyers ask

Is belly the best part of the skin?

For regular patterns and consistent grading, yes. Other cuts are different, not worse, and suit different designs.

Do you supply flank or back skins?

No. We supply belly skins only. See the portfolio for species, widths and finishes.
